mocking the french; sarkozy: chirac's replacement?
found this on imao

The French government announced early today that it has raised their terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher terror alert levels in France are "Surrender" and "Collaborate". The raise in the threat level was precipitated by a recent fire which destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively disabling their military...

worth at least a little giggle。

on a slightly more serious note, i've come across the name sarkozy in about five different places today。 widely tipped to replace chiraq when he finally faces the electorate in 2007 (along with probable criminal prosecution)。 sarkozy is openly admiring of america and the anglo-saxon world and ideas in general。 he also seems to be serious about stopping the rampant anti-jewish attacks in france。 he appears to be a free-marketeer, although he has in the past gone back on that, possibly in order to get himself into a position such that he can get the presidency。 more importantly, he is apparently seriously popular, at least in comparison to the old farts around him。

here are a short and long synopsis about him。 both articles seem long on fluff and short of actual policy details: much talk of "right-wing", "law and order" or areas in which he has apparently novel solutions, but almost nothing in the way of examples。 he is of the baby boomer generation and would be the first such to reach high office in france, a country traditionally run by a small group of very old men。

no doubt i'd need someone who's willing to read lots of french in order to work out what he's really about and whether he is really as good as he is being painted。 still he seems highly unlikely to be as bad as the senile old fool that france is currently lumbered with。。 and as another frenchman (voltaire) once said "the perfect is the enemy of the good"。
