How to say ...
I am exec. staff of my local anime con and occasionally need to try to explain this to my teachers in Japanese. Since I have just contacted the head of the department about going onto get a master's, I may soon need to talk to her about this. (I am wanting to do a vaguely pop-culture related thesis, so it might come up)

In the context of a convention, what words should be used for:
*panel
*event
*contest (as in cosplay contest)
*art show
*workshops
*guest speakers

And ... yeah, I am not even going to try to explain things like our Host Club or the Loli Tea Party ;) But, what I would like to impress upon her is the amount and diversity of events. I know Japan doesn't really have con in the way we do, so I am trying to get across that we are not just a huge fan market.

Also, if anyone wants to post questions about the con and see if I can answer them, that would be nifty. I've been walking around my house all day talking to myself about the con.

My parent's house!
What's the word for "my parent's house." I know I've heard it mentioned before, and it's not "両親の家".

Does this same word apply to the home of someone's elses parents? For instance "My roommate went back live at her parent's home."

Thanks :)

Same Kanji Same Word
1.Hi! I'm sort of new at Japanese and I was wondering why sometimes there are two kanji for the same word, such as 才 and 歳, there are others but I can't think of them right now. I tried googling but i couldn't find anything. :(

2.Ohhh, and i was wondering what the word for "different" as in the opposite of 同じ would be. When i look it up in the dictionary all i get is words that have the nuance of "unique, odd," like how we'd say "Ohhh, that's different." I'm assuming they don't have that same nuance in Japanese, right?

Thanks!!!!!!!!

grammar and kanji bits
ただ、その顔ぶれの中でも特に、そのときそこにいたことを覚えている者ほど、七年経った今でも、わりと親しい。
What does the underlined part mean? If it were just もの I'd think it was some sort of nominalizer + ほど, and if the ほど weren't there I'd think the 者 was referring to the people there (which I still do). I dunno, that bit's confusing me.
And while I'm here, does anyone know of any good resources that compare kanji with similar meanings as well as readings, such as 見る and 観る, 聞く and 聴く, 会う and 逢う, etc?
Finally, is it legitimate to write 。。。 instead of ... or ...? Because every time I see that it annoys the heck out of me, but I don't want to get all grumpy about it when it turns out that that's perfectly legitimate. (And who knows, maybe ... isn't legitimate either, except in manga.)

Too bad I can't remember what we were talking about.
[info]embryomystic, to me: "You can say that with a straight face or a southern accent, but not both at the same time!"

* Recently someone said to me, "You from Jersey or New York?" Nobody I don't know personally ever believes me when I reply "South Carolina." Then I get answers like, "You are not from South Carolina, talkin' like that."

When we have shuffled off this mortal coil must give us pause...
Friday, May 9, 2008
Sun location: Taurus
Moon location: Cancer
Moon phase: first quarter
Dream type: subjective

I'm back in the ICU waiting room. I've made a point of going there frequently. It's a welcome break from dealing with the woman with the necrosing heart - if you can call her a woman any longer. She's a dried-out husk of a human being. The perennial scent of disinfectants and dying bodies in the ICU threatens to choke me on a daily basis. I trade it out periodically for the scent of anxiety and cheap coffee.

The (other dead) woman I saw before is there a lot. Most times I see her, she has bloodshot eyes and is wearing old, beat-up clothing. She tells me her name is Angela. She is black and looks like she's at least in her mid-forties as well. When I think about it, she looks vaguely like an older version (or older relative) of one of my former supervisors. Sometimes I see her smoking (Marlboro Lights), which is doubly odd, as she's supposed to be dead as I am and it's a hospital waiting room. Stranger still is when I show up with two styofoam coffee cups and we "clink" them together. Angela's a great listener.

     I tell her:

"So I've had a better look around my house. Or what seems to be my house. It's not like the one I lived in when I was living, and I haven't seen a house that resembles it since 1996. It looks vaguely like the house of a friend of my first boyfriend's. There are books everywhere, which isn't at all shocking for me. But the vast majority of them are all medical reference texts. Almost none aren't. The only books I've seen that aren't are The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, The Bhagavad-Gita, and The Prophet. Funny, that. I tried to read the Bhagavad-Gita when I was in high school and I think I fell asleep. I don't recall being able to understand it. I just filed it under 'shit I don't understand' next to The Kabbalah. I lost it before I thought to use it as something of a fix for insomnia."

     "Mmm." Angela nodded.

"I've since thought about using the introduction to Treasure Island for that purpose." I'm weirded out that I'm supposed to be dead, but I'm talking about having insomnia. "You know how little girls, at least the ones I knew, are all crazy about tackling unabridged versions of books? Maybe it's only the die-hard literary/book-worm kind of girls, but anyway. When I was ten, I tried reading the introduction, or was it foreword? To Treasure Island. I don't think I lasted ten minutes before I passed the fuck out. I wonder if that's just because I was ten or if it was just that damn boring." I take a breath. "You know, I feel cut off a lot lately. Not lonely, though. Just. Cut off. Do you know what I mean? Totally disconnected from everything. Not like depersonalisation or derealisation, just. Not feeling the interconnectedness of all beings. Not feeling anything but... not being able to help these people I see in so much pain."

She nods with a knowing look.

"There's something else I've been thinking about."
     "What?"
"I wasn't totally white like this when I was alive."
     "Really, now."
"No. Were you black when you were alive?"
     "No."
"Christ, this is starting to look like What Dreams May Come."

Dialogue!
Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me with a bit of dialogue.

I was watching an old Digimon episode, and understanding it all pretty well, until I got to this line of Hikari's:

お兄ちゃんがお小したことにしてくれたの。

I'm pretty sure I've copied it right, but I did it by ear. Up until this point she's been talking about how her brother took care of her when she wet the bed. (I'm assuming that's what she meant by 小した but actually my dictionary only reads 寝小便 as "bed-wetting." Maybe it's slang, or kid-talk?)

I honestly can't think of a way to translate this line that makes sense contextually. I found one site that translated it as "Plus he told my parents about it [the bed-wetting]." But I don't see how that fits.

In case I misheard the sentence, and some kind soul wants to double-check it for me, it's at 8:59 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QoKWc5GRqc

Can anyone help me translate it? I really would appreciate the help.

I seem to have spent all day walking backwards and forwards to school! I didn't get to go to the gym - a six mile round trip in this heat was more than enough exercise for me!

Ben came round last night with wine and I had two glasses - And then I stopped! go me.

Poor Lil has a tooth infection of some kind and her face is all swollen up so she looks really lopsided. I don't really want to ruin another day of work to go to the dentist but I suppose I will have to as James won't :(

Much though I love the children (and it has been nice picking them up from school and dropping them off and having them an extra few hours a day and helping them with their homework and stitching the holes in their clothes and cooking dinners with loads of tiny portions of vegetables and all the proper mum stuff) nobody seems to much care that I'm supposed to somehow be fitting 8 hours of work into my day as well which is really hard when running all around town on foot. I am coming to the conclusion that it's pretty much impossible to be a single parent and work. I get moral support from Steve and help paying my bills, and James has the kids half the time usually, and I don't have to travel to work anymore, and it's still a struggle. Congratulations to anyone out there who manages all on their own with a normal job, I don't know how you manage it!

I am also fretting and want to go out, but if I go out I will drink, and I have been doing so well not drinking - and I have been feeling better for it. I'm in the middle of one of my Glooms at the moment and finding it hard to shake, but physically I'm feeling loads better so I absolutely mustn't ruin it all just because I want to knock my brain out. Perhaps I could put my head in between two fridge magnets instead.

Ho hum.

I still keep listening to "Attack of the Alien Space Robots" on autorepeat. We're really excited about being in [info]hexadbs film :D.

Japanese poetry
Hi!
Sorry for bothering, but I need some help)
I'm writing my term paper and looking for all possible information about the Japanese poetry, haiku and tanka. Perhaps, some of you did find such kind of info in the net? maybe, some examinations of its structure, language, or comparising of modern and ancient poetry? if you could share the info, it would be really helpful.
Great thanks in advance)

A social worker who became a heroine by saving over 2,500 children in the Jewish Ghettos in Poland in 1939-43, and never betrayed them or the network of people who helped her, despite being tortured and left for dead by the Nazis.

I'd salute in her honour, but as her obituary in the papers made me go tearful, that's probably more appropriate.

May she rest in peace.

Best way to sincerely thank someone?
Hello. :) My friends and I have been taking Japanese for three years and have had the same teacher for the duration of those three years. We are all graduating later this month and we're working on drawing up an award to give our teacher.

Is there a more, for lack of a better term, extreme way to say "どうもありがとうございました!"?

Basically, this woman changed our lives completely. I would have NEVER known what I wanted to study in college/pursue as a career if it were not for her. I would have never gone to Japan if it were not for her either. She impacted each and every one of our lives a different way, but each way was just as meaningful.

Is どうもありがとうございました!the most appropriate way to thank her? Or could we do a little better? =)

Thanks!

Setting kana input as default for all newly opened applications
My office just got a new Windows XP computer, and one of our guys is wondering if it's possible to set it up so that the default input mode is Japanese.

I have already set it up so that the "default input language" in Text Services and Input Languages shows "Japanese - Microsoft IME Standard 2002 ver 8.1". However, even though the IME loads and is set to default on boot, the IME starts up in direct input mode.

This wouldn't be a problem if our guys could just switch to kana mode once and be done with it. But every time a new application, or sometimes even just a new window is opened, the IME reverts to direct input mode and has to be switched to kana again.

Is there a way to set the IME to load in kana mode by default?

Electronic Dictionaries Addons
Good evening everyone,

I currently own a Casio EX-WORD Dataplus 4 XD-SP4800 (wow what a mouthfull), and have loved it since I got it, however, I am planning on starting up Chinese (Mandarin) again when I return from Japan to my home country.

My question is this...
Does anyone know how/where/if I can download a Chinese Mandarin --> English and vice versa dictionary from the internet, to my dictionary. I have a microsd card for my dictionary which I know I can add dictionaries too, like french, spanish, etc etc, and then I just plop this card into my dictionary and use it, however, I have not downloaded any dictionaries before and am having trouble finding them.

I am after
Chinese <--> English

Also, do you know if I end up finding one, will i be able to use my stylus to draw in the kanji/hanzi as I do with Japanese kanji?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I was so excited when I found out after months that my elec dictionary has a card slot to which I can add things like text files and the such. This will come in handy to write down new grammar I am learning in class so I have it at my disposal in 2 seconds.

Wishing you all well with your studies, Mikel.

***EDIT***
Sorry guys I just realised you may be wondering WHY i posted this in the Japanese lj communitiy, I am studying Japanese in japan at the moment, and have been with this community for a long while and know that people here always have intelligent, great answers. He he he.

Adding comments via a client with XML-RPC?
Hi! I'm writing a LiveJournal client using the XML-RPC interface. What I can't seem to find in the documentation (and it may not exist) is a way to use XML-RPC to add comments to Friends entries, or even the authenticated user's own journal. The latter is actually more interesting to me -- to be able to reply to comments in your own journal.

Is that possible? Am I missing something? The only other way I could see to do this would be to basically do a POST request to talkpost_do.bml, but that seems clumsy.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

おまえのカーング・フはまだまだだな。
From the archives of "I listened to this in high school" comes Keoki's remix of Alpha Team's "Go Speed Go."

It's a blast from the past to the tune of the early 90s. It's tawdry, but it would be quite impossible to use sound clips from an English dub of a 1960s anime and not be. Note the completely random insertion of a Looney Tunes sound clip at the beginning.

For the record, I've been in the same room with (meaning a few feet away from) Corinne Orr and Peter Fernandez (the voices of Trixie and Speed/Racer X, respectively. Peter also bagged a role as a local announcer in the Wachowski Brothers adaptation). When this happened, I kept thinking of this track, thinking, Dear God, do these people have any idea what people have done with their performances?

     This is less porny.

In other film news, Tony Stark listens to Suicidal Tendencies? I love it. Not least because I had a huge crush on Robert Downey, Jr., in the mid-1980s.

Fun in the park with rache and dom and soozie, tony and laylah, matt and tex. I am finding the heat barely tolerable, but seem to have survived by dint of factor 50 suncream, my old-man hat and staying in the shade when possible. I may become housebound if it gets much hotter though. I haven't had any alcohol for a week and don't think I will unless it gets cooler!

Harry wouldn't wear sunblock, so he had to spend the whole day in steve's cowboy hat. Photos later..

I have been playing our CD on autorepeat.. it's really good :) Steves a bit annoyed because he had to stay up until 3am helping master it so he's heard everything fifty times already..

Casio XD-GW9600 potentially for sale
I'm just putting out my feelers here, but I'm thinking of upgrading from the Casio XD-GW9600 to the Casio XD-GP9700 (the 9700 has native Japanese pronunciation - i.e. will allow me to verify the correct pitch), but I can't really justify losing $200 to gain a single feature which many argue isn't all that necessary. So here's my question: would anybody be interested in buying a like-new XD-GW9600, and how much would you be willing to pay for it? Comments are screened.
(For specs, check the 9700 link - it seems like the Japanese audio is the only difference. Or, you can read an in-depth review here.)

We're all up and ready (except for Katie who is still lurking in her room tweaking her dreds or something) and off to recording! Yay!

It always seems like such an adventure :) And we love Justin, he has a theremin.

Typical this morning I woke up with a cough.. time to hit the tixylix I think!

Hello Japanese speakers,

Five For magazine is an English language magazine that is working to spread the JMusic (all genre, not just JRock) love throughout the English speaking world, and we're in need of another volunteer.

We need someone who is strong in English to Japanese translation, and can knock out an 18-25 question interview within a week. We will provide you with a Word document with the questions in English, and you'll add the translation to the same document. These are for our email interviews, and we will try not to ask you to do more than 2 a month. We may also ask for help with emails, though we will try to keep those going through our regular translation staff.

In exchange, you get your name in print, and, after you have done several projects for us, we can provide a letter of reference for your resume, or a letter to a professor if you're looking to receive extra credit this way.

Our current translation staff suggests a competence level of JLPT 2 or better for this position, though you do not need to have taken the JLPT to apply.

If interested, please send us an email at submissions@five-for.com

Hi guys,

While I was in Japan I bought a LOT of textbooks, and it was great. But now I'm back home (in Australia) and it's rather difficult to track down textbooks for my level (around level 2). I bought some good JLPT prep books from Amazon Japan, but what I'm actually looking for are the offical JEES practice tests, which they don't have. I have a few I got in Japan, but I need 2007's, and maybe some earlier tests...any thoughts on websites I could get them from?

Alternativly, are there any publishers that make JLPT-style practice tests? I havn't seen any, but still...

Hilarity
On the way home from school, we were very hot and tired, so I let the children prevail upon me to buy loads of frozen fruit and a hand blender thing from tescos (£4! Why are the electrical appliances cheaper than the food?) with the intent of making smoothies.

I obviously didn't think this through brilliantly. We don't have a big jug thing of an appropriate size, so we ended up using a mixing bowl. We're all absolutely covered with bits of strawberry, rasberry, blackcurrant, mango and papaya.

On the plus side, I've never seen them that enthusiastic about eating fruit before.

I think I'm going to leave cleaning the kitchen till a bit later. I don't want to ruin the mood ;)

Dating a korean guy
Hi, I'm new to this community but I came across when I was looking for some advice on dating a Korean guy.
I saw the old post from 2006 about a white girl dating a korean guy and I thought it was very helpful so I decided to ask myself lol.
I'm a black American dating a Korean guy and the relationship is getting a little hard these days. He's met my parents many times but he won't introduce me to his. I think I'm finally starting to understand that Korea guys only take the girl home to meet his parents when he's ready to get married. He's also the oldest of the family and he always tells me the pressure he's under by his family to do what they want.
I was wondering if you guys have any advice for me. I care about my boyfriend very much, so it doesn't bother me he won't introduce me to his family but I'm wondering if they're is any way I can help him get over the stress.
Any ideas would help :)

痕つけるって何?
I've come across a kanji missing from three of the dictionaries I own: 痕つける (ato tsukeru) as in 体中に痕つける返してやる。 This sentence is uttered by a guy trying to have his way with an innocent (and non-consenting) young girl. Does it have something to do with 'touching'? Any help much appreciated.

It is such a lovely day and I'm finding it hard to settle to do work.. I keep wandering out onto the balcony.. ho hum.. more work this weekend I guess.

Haven't touched a drop of booze all week and have eaten lots of fruit and vegetables but haven't made it to the gym.. I've been having to walk to pick the kids up though, which is a few miles a day up and down hills, so I've not been entirely sedentary. I feel better, I think, although I need to cut down on smoking too. It's a race to lose weight before it gets too hot for me to go outside, I hate being fat in the summer, it's so undignified. My body has changed shape a little already - less flobbery more solid.

Going into the studio tomorrow to record as much stuff as we can before Katie leaves - pretty excited. Had a massive practice yesterday, my drumming is getting much faster/tighter/controlled and I can do little flourishes and stuff without losing it. It's actually quite a subtle skill learning it properly..

Wattsy is defintiely going to be moving in to the Adenoids House in a couple of weeks, and he's starting work with Matt at Cob too.. that'll be about 3 years that everybody living in that house has been an Adenoid and worked at Cob. Must be something in the water ;)
